How to Search Google Without AI

Can you completely turn off Google AI?

No. Google says AI Overviews are a core Search feature and can't be turned off. The Web filter shows only text links without AI Overviews.

Can you turn off Google AI Overviews?

No. Google's help page says "Features cannot be turned off." You can use the Web filter, which Google documents, or set udm=14 as the default. Setting that default is not an official Google feature.

Readers also ask how to turn off, disable, get rid of, or hide AI Overviews, and what to do about Google AI. AI Mode is a separate browser feature, covered next.

What about AI Mode and Gemini in Chrome?

AI Mode and Gemini in Chrome are browser features. They are not the same thing as AI Overviews on the search results page. We're testing this; see the changelog.

What doesn't work

The "AI in Search" control in Search Labs only covers experimental features. It does not turn off AI Overviews. Google's help page is the source.

Method 1: Make Google's Web results your default (udm=14)

Pending test Not an official setting.

The udm=14 parameter opens Google's Web results view. Google does not document this parameter, and Google may change it.

Chrome (desktop)

Pending test

  1. Open Settings, then Search engine, then Manage search engines and site search.
  2. Under Site search, choose Add.
  3. Name it Google Web, set a shortcut, and paste the URL template.
  4. Open the menu beside the new entry and choose Make default.

Menu names follow https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95426 and will be confirmed in the hands-on test.

Chrome (Android)

Pending test

  1. Chrome for Android cannot add a custom search engine by hand.
  2. You can only pick a site from the ones you visited recently.

Until a hands-on test says otherwise, use Method 2 on each search, use Firefox for Android, or switch to another engine.

Firefox (desktop and Android)

Pending test

  1. Desktop: Settings, then Search, then Search Shortcuts, then Add. Desktop needs Firefox 140 or later.
  2. Android: Settings, then Search, then Add search engine.

Edge (desktop)

Pending test

  1. Open edge://settings/searchEngines.
  2. Choose Add, then Make default.

Safari (Mac, iPhone, iPad)

Pending test

  1. Safari only lists the search engines built into the system.
  2. It cannot use a custom results URL.

Use Method 2 instead. Third-party extensions exist. We do not name or endorse an extension until we have tested it ourselves.

Method 2: Use the Web filter on any search

Pending test Official method.

This is Google's documented Web filter. It works on every device. It is not saved, so you select it after every search.

  1. Run a search on Google.
  2. Select Web above the results. It may be inside More.

Method 3: Use a search engine without AI

Pending test

You can leave Google and use search engines that don't use AI.

You can also compare search engines without AI.

Methods that no longer work

None confirmed yet. We list a method here only after our own test shows it stopped working.
